President Donald Trump has announced significant progress towards a peace deal with Iran, following extensive talks involving leaders from the Middle East, Pakistan, and Israel. Trump indicated that the proposed agreement, which aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address the conflict that erupted earlier this year, is nearly finalized with only some details pending before an official declaration.
The discussions have reportedly included leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, and Pakistan, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, Iranian officials have contested parts of Trump’s statement, particularly regarding oversight of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, asserting that Iran would maintain authority over the waterway, including decisions on shipping routes and permits.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the diplomatic advancements and expressed Pakistan’s willingness to host further negotiations between the United States and Iran. Pakistan’s military chief, General Syed Asim Munir, has been notably active in mediation efforts, having recently met with Iranian leaders in Tehran.
According to reports, the draft proposal might feature a 60-day ceasefire extension, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without imposing tolls, lessened restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and a revival of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. In exchange, the United States may consider easing limitations on Iranian ports and releasing frozen Iranian assets as part of a comprehensive settlement.
Despite the diplomatic strides, tensions persist. Trump cautioned that military interventions could resume if negotiations falter, while some critics in the Republican Party argue that the proposed terms bear resemblance to previous nuclear agreements they have opposed. The potential agreement has sparked a debate in Washington, with proponents seeing it as a means to prevent further conflict and economic disruption, whereas opponents fear it might enhance Iran’s regional power.
