Iran has accused Qatar of hindering its investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots during a recent conflict. Tehran claims these pilots vanished after an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Iranian armed forces official Mohammad Bagherzadeh stated that an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been waiting for months to secure permission to travel to Qatar for the investigation. He urged Qatari authorities to allow the team to visit and called upon the International Committee of the Red Cross to assist in resolving the issue.
In response, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, strongly refuted the allegations. He clarified that Qatar had made contact with the pilots after they allegedly breached Qatari airspace. Due to a lack of response to communication attempts, Qatar was compelled to take defensive measures. Al-Ansari emphasized that Qatar had not detained any Iranian pilots.
Qatar also reported that its search and rescue teams conducted operations to find the pilots and any remains. One pilot’s remains were recovered, and Doha coordinated with Iran to facilitate the transfer. According to Qatari officials, Iranian authorities were invited back in April to send a team to Qatar to receive information concerning the search and rescue efforts but did not respond to this invitation.
The situation has unfolded amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the US, and other neighboring countries following the conflict’s outbreak earlier this year. Qatar has played a vital role in diplomatic endeavors aimed at reducing these tensions and facilitating dialogue between the involved parties.
