He died of natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment industry professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. In 1981, Rydell directed “On Golden Pond,” a film that brought together the talents of Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The movie was a critical and commercial success, receiving 10 Academy Award nominations. Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn both won Oscars for their performances, and the film also marked Fonda’s final role, earning him his only Oscar. Rydell himself was nominated for Best Director, although the award ultimately went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”
