Bahrain and France have reinforced their strategic partnership with a focus on defence, energy, and technology, following official talks between Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and French President Emmanuel Macron. The discussions aimed to widen bilateral cooperation in several key areas, including sustainable development and investment, reflecting the longstanding ties between the two nations.

Central to the talks was the enhancement of defence and security collaboration, underlined by a defence cooperation agreement signed earlier this year. Both leaders reaffirmed the necessity of bolstering defence ties to uphold regional stability. King Hamad voiced Bahrain’s support for Saudi Arabia in light of recent Houthi attacks, underscoring the kingdom’s commitment to regional security and territorial integrity.

The talks also addressed the broader geopolitical landscape, with the leaders exchanging views on the Middle East’s ongoing challenges. They highlighted the importance of respect for national sovereignty and dialogue as pathways to lasting peace. Cooperation through international organizations like the United Nations was emphasized, particularly regarding regional security and the Palestinian issue.

Energy security emerged as a significant topic, with Bahrain and France signing a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This agreement aims to develop civilian nuclear energy expertise through training and knowledge-sharing, indicating a shared commitment to reliable energy supplies.

In addition to defence and energy, the discussions explored potential joint projects in industry and transportation, including a proposed railway connectivity linking Bahrain with other Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Macron highlighted opportunities for industrial cooperation, particularly with Aluminium Bahrain (Alba).

The meeting concluded with a gesture of recognition, as King Hamad awarded Macron the Collar of the Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Exceptional Class, acknowledging his role in strengthening Franco-Bahraini relations. This visit underscores the two nations’ commitment to deepening their strategic partnership and expanding cooperation across various sectors.
