Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, passed away at the age of 85. According to a statement from his family, Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career in the Canadian television and radio industry before emerging as a significant figure in voice acting. His portrayal of Optimus Prime began with the original Transformers animated series in 1984, a role he reprised across seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, alongside various spin-offs. Additionally, Cullen brought to life the beloved character of Eeyore, the gloomy donkey from Winnie the Pooh, in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous subsequent adaptations in television, film, and video games.
Beyond these iconic roles, Cullen’s voice lent itself to various memorable characters, including KARR, the villainous alter ego of KITT in the television series Knight Rider. In the 1987 action film Predator, he was responsible for the creature’s distinctive clicking sounds, and he also voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake of the classic film.
Peter Cullen attributed the development of Optimus Prime’s heroic yet non-aggressive personality to his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, whose influence was instrumental in shaping the character’s traits.
