Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian citizen detained in Iran since December 2024, has been released, according to an announcement by US President Donald Trump. Trump shared the news on Truth Social, highlighting that Karari is “now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition.” He characterized her release as a gesture of goodwill from Iran.
Jared Genser, Karari’s lawyer, confirmed her safety and noted that she is en route back to the United States. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Trump administration in negotiating her release.
Karari’s detention began in 2024 after she traveled to Iran to visit her family. Her situation escalated following military actions by the US and Israel against Iran in 2025, leading Iranian authorities to accuse her of espionage.
