Oman has underscored its dedication to ensuring maritime security and promoting freedom of navigation while enhancing ties with Southeast Asian countries. This was articulated during a ministerial gathering in Manila, Philippines, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC). Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi highlighted the importance of international law, mutual respect, and peaceful collaboration as fundamental pillars for sustaining both regional and global stability.
In his address, Minister Al Busaidi stressed the critical role of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and fostering trust among nations. He emphasized that essential international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz, should remain open, secure, and accessible to facilitate global navigation and trade. The minister pointed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the essential framework for maintaining maritime security and safeguarding global trade, food security, and energy supplies.
Oman also called for enhanced cooperation among coastal states and users of major international shipping lanes. The minister cited the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as exemplary models of successful collaborative maritime security efforts. This serves as a reminder of the benefits of working together to manage and protect critical waterways.
Furthermore, Oman reiterated its commitment to fortifying maritime partnerships with ASEAN member states. This renewed focus aims to bolster mutual ties and ensure the safety and security of vital maritime routes that support international trade and economic stability across the region.
