In a significant diplomatic engagement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Istanbul to explore avenues for deepening strategic cooperation between their nations. The discussions, held at Istanbul’s Vahdettin Palace, centered on enhancing trade, defense, energy, and infrastructure partnerships, as well as coordinating on regional security matters.
During the high-level talks, the leaders, along with senior officials from both countries, delved into strategies to elevate bilateral trade, which currently stands at about $1.2–1.35 billion. They expressed a shared commitment to reaching a long-term trade goal of $5 billion. Opportunities for increased Turkish investment in Pakistan’s key sectors, including energy, agriculture, transport, and technology, were also on the agenda.
Defense collaboration emerged as a focal point of the discussions, with dialogues covering areas such as military equipment, joint training initiatives, and intelligence sharing. The leaders explored potential future co-production initiatives, reinforcing the role of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council as a catalyst for advancing cooperation across various sectors.
In addition to economic and defense topics, the talks addressed regional developments, focusing on areas such as the Middle East, Afghanistan, and counter-terrorism efforts. Strengthening digital connectivity also featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting a shared vision for technological advancement.
Following their talks, Erdoğan and Sharif were expected to present the outcomes and any new agreements during a joint press conference, signaling a continued commitment to bolstering the strategic partnership between Turkey and Pakistan.
