Sharjah has introduced a new logistics corridor with Oman, significantly cutting down cargo transit times from nearly three months to just 35 days. This development aims to enhance supply chain efficiency, reduce transportation expenses, and bolster trade connections between the UAE, Oman, and the broader regional markets. The corridor links Sharjah with Oman’s key ports, such as Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, via the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. Officials anticipate that transit times will decrease even further as operations continue to mature.
To promote the use of this corridor, Sharjah has implemented toll exemptions for cargo trucks traveling through the designated routes from Oman. This initiative also includes expedited customs clearance, streamlined cargo movement, and the flexibility for businesses to complete customs procedures at inland container terminals rather than at the border crossings. Such measures are expected to lower logistics costs by approximately 15%, depending on the type and requirements of the cargo. The corridor is particularly advantageous for manufacturers, as it speeds up the delivery of both raw materials and finished products.
The project aligns with Sharjah’s strategic objective to establish itself as a leading regional logistics and manufacturing hub. With over 3,000 factories contributing around 25% to the emirate’s GDP, the enhanced trade route is projected to boost exports and attract international investors interested in accessing markets in Africa, India, and Asia. The corridor has been operational since May 14, facilitating cargo movement in both directions through coordinated customs procedures, real-time data exchange, and dedicated fast-track shipment lanes.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in regional logistics, underscoring Sharjah’s commitment to economic growth and international trade. By improving the efficiency of cargo movement and reducing associated costs, the corridor not only strengthens Sharjah’s economic standing but also enhances its appeal to global investors. As operations continue to evolve, the corridor is expected to play a crucial role in fostering stronger economic ties between the UAE, Oman, and neighboring regions.
