Oman is preparing to unveil the “Imtidad” Community Solar Power Stations Programme next week, marking a significant advancement in promoting renewable energy participation among the public. Spearheaded by the Public Services Regulation Authority (PSRA) in collaboration with licensed electricity companies, this initiative will enable residents and businesses to access solar power benefits without needing to install solar panels on their premises.
Participants in the programme will receive credits on their electricity bills from the energy produced by community solar stations linked to the national grid. This model is designed to lower energy expenses, foster the adoption of clean energy, and aid in Oman’s journey towards a more sustainable energy landscape. A landmark event in this programme is the opening of the Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Power Station, recognized as the first project under Imtidad and Oman’s inaugural community-based solar facility. Authorities have plans to extend similar projects throughout the nation gradually.
Officials highlight that the programme will bring economic, social, and environmental advantages by encouraging renewable energy investments, supporting local enterprises, generating employment opportunities, and enhancing energy efficiency. This initiative aligns with Oman’s broader objectives to diversify its energy sources, bolster sustainability efforts, and propel the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
Community solar projects are poised to make renewable energy more accessible, particularly for households and businesses that lack the space or resources for private solar installations. By doing so, these projects contribute significantly to the national clean energy targets, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources.
