A series of Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv and its surroundings has resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, marking the sixth consecutive night of intensified strikes on the Ukrainian capital and its critical infrastructure. In Kyiv, eight people were killed, including six railway workers at a depot, while four more lost their lives in the Boryspil area. The attacks also left several others wounded, among them children.
The overnight assault targeted Kyiv and Odesa with a barrage of drones and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian officials reported that while a significant portion of these weapons were intercepted by the country’s air defenses, several managed to reach their targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pointed out that the effectiveness of Russian strikes increases when Ukraine faces shortages of US-made Patriot air-defense interceptors, which are crucial for countering high-speed ballistic missiles. He accused Russia of deliberately planning its strikes to maximize destruction to civilian lives.
Ukraine’s railway network has been heavily impacted by the attacks, with railway officials confirming that six railway employees were among those killed at the depot. Damage to railway facilities has disrupted services, compounding the challenges faced by a transport system vital for both civilian use and wartime logistics. Ukrainian authorities have also noted an increase in Russia’s use of jet-powered drones, which they describe as more challenging to intercept, leading to prolonged periods in shelters for residents and significant disruption to daily life in Kyiv.
In response to the escalating attacks, Ukraine has launched strikes against Russian military and energy infrastructure, including targeting oil facilities and warehouses, in an effort to exert economic and military pressure on Moscow. Despite these efforts, the conflict remains at a stalemate on the battlefield, with little progress toward a diplomatic resolution. Ukrainian officials continue to call for additional air-defense systems from Western allies, particularly as winter approaches.
While international efforts to end the conflict have made limited headway, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to take steps toward ending the war, emphasizing the importance of shifting focus from ongoing conflict to peace. This call for diplomatic engagement highlights the global desire for an end to the hostilities that continue to impact countless lives in the region.
